The Residencia is today a unique center in the Spanish cultural scene. Every year it becomes a meeting point for nearly 3.000 worlwide researchers, artists and scholars, in short stays (usually no longer that one week).

The Residencia de Estudiantes offers an open space for debate, critical discussion and creative work within the context of contemporary trends and ideas. Many of today's major figures in science and the arts have taken part in its lecture series, round tables, concerts, poem readings or symposiums.

The Residencia de Estudiantes is now a private foundation established by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). The Minister of Education and Science is the president of a Board of Trustees co-presided by the Minister of Foreign Affaires and Cooperation, the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade and the Minister of Culture, and which includes, besides the CSIC and the ministries, Madrid's City Council, the Regional Government of Madrid, the Junta de Andalucía, the Government of Aragon, the BBVA, Caja de Madrid, Fundación Carolina, Fundación El Monte, GlaxoSmithKline, Telefónica and the Asociación de Amigos de la Residencia de Estudiantes.
